The importance of inversions among all asana is first that they have far-reaching effects on all the body’s organs: structural effects, organic effects such as metabolism, digestion, and hormone balance, and mental and emotional benefits such as clarity, mood, and focus. What is perhaps not as often appreciated is how widely the inversions link to all other asana. Variations in how the arms and legs are used in the inversions connect them to movements we make in standing poses, forward bends, backbends, twists and abdominal poses. These other kinds of poses acts as preparation for the inversions, and the inversions act as a sort of completion of the other poses.
